burning antifreeze?
for some reason, my antifreeze is leaking somewhere. i took a look around my water hoses and it doesnt seem to be leaking anywhere. i turned on my engine and it seems like cylinder 4 from the exhaust side is burning antifreeze. im not too sure. wat could be wrong here? need new head gasket?
my first dohc vtec swap. 3rd d16y7 swap. LOL

Wow thats not good. Is it a lot of a leak? Consistant leak? I think some mechanics have a fluid they can add to your radiator then use a "black light" type of light to see where the leak is coming from. It may be a hairline crack at your radiator. Since its hot outside it would make for a burning smell. (speaking from prior experience) Make sure you keep an eye out on your temp gauge.
If an emergency roll down all your windows and crank your heat on high to relieve pressure and cool down your engine till you get to a safe place to turn off your car and wait for help.

RE: burning antifreeze?
is the car overheating?
if you look in your radiator and see kinda like a brown milky liquid, then it could be your head gasket.
as far as the hoses go, while the car is running, check real throughorly (spelling?) for any kind of cracks or tiny holes. i had a tiny pin size hole in one of my hoses that kept causing all the coolant to leak out, and i could never tell from what.

RE: burning antifreeze?
I would personally replace the head gasket and the radiator, then go from there. But more then likely that would fix your problem.

thanks a lot guys. during my swap, i replaced the top and lower hoses with new ones since the dx hoses were too small. also, i dont see any brown residue floating in my radiator. also, i believe the head isnt cracked. i am looking into buying a new radiator though. what should be better? aftermarket or stock? im thinking of getting an alluminum but im not too sure yet. ill probably replace the radiator then replace my head gasket later. thanks a lot for your help.

RE: burning antifreeze?
there's this head gasket repair stuff i got from autozone, it was like $20 but i figured i would give it a try before replacing the heater core on my eclipse. well anyways it's a permanent fix, and it really worked. it's in like a neon green bottle and it says it repairs hoses, heater cores, head gaskets, radiators, etc.. i would give that a try before replacing anything. don't remember the name of it though

RE: burning antifreeze?
Why not try to accurately DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM FIRST before you start throwing money at it? Take it to a mechanic and get them to run a Pressure Test, Hydrocarbon Test, & Dye Check to find out what is really going on. I know mechanics are expensive, but so is buying parts that you don't really need.
