RE: DIY: Turbo 2nd Gen TL

Here's some more pics, I have to admit, doing good so far! Finals are almost over! Then I get to worry about finishing this car and the harness!

BEHOLD! The Short Ram Intake (SRI) for the turbo assembly:

Putting in that fresh green stuff Big Grin

Not bad for practicing with a welder for 8 hrs... did the flange for the BOV:

Started my intercooler piping, first step.. pipes welded:

Cut the pipe and fitted the BOV pipe with a 2.5" -> 3" reducer:

cut down my 45 degree pipe to the right size and fitted:

Almost done..

fitted the BOV and tightened it:

done:

RE: DIY: Turbo 2nd Gen TL

Alright guys, I have good news, I started the car for a few minutes, BUT... I had to turn it off again and take apart everything so I can finish the DIY write-up and put everything back together again. But alas.. PICTURES!

Have fun! Big Grin

Been wearing the same work clothes for days..
Need a haircut...
Dirty as ****...
BUT... for a car, it's definitely worth it!

Modified Piping!

The modified flex and down pipes:

The shortened charge pipe:

Shortened header pipe for lowered cars (will fit the j32, and 30:

corrected rear flange (I angled it a few mm's in the opposite direction, definitely flush with the rear header now:

The "New" XS Power kit:

For the charge pipe, you want to heat wrap the piping so it doesn't mess with any wiring, the clutch lines, or sensors:

heat wrap the downpipe:

Grab your O-rings and header bolts:

You want to place each o-ring in the appropriate ring slot:

You need to cut away with your grinder this notch so the charge pipe's flanges can clear:

Notch removed:

You can't even see that pipe, amazing, isn't it? Big Grin

Next, grab your gasket and screws, insert between the header and charge pipes, have your screws in place, then tighten:

Done:

Grab your waste gate, screws, allen key, and gasket:

RE: DIY: Turbo 2nd Gen TL

Place the gasket first and then the wastegate:

Tighten and then take a quick break:

Alright, for your turbo mounting, grab your turbo mounting screws, they'll have these markings on the top of each one, there should be 4 all together:

Grab your gaskets:

Put them in place:

Mount the turbo in place:

And now, for the turbo outlet, if you want to move/rotate it, there are a series of 4 brackets held down by 8 bolts (2 bolts per bracket), loosen/remove these to rotate the housing, and them put them back when you're done. Be sure to be CAREFUL with the red rubber seal that's in there, you'll see what I mean once you take off the housing.

Remember to attach your oil feed line:

Alright guys, here's some more progress pics:

First off.. the bumper.. I started trimming and sanding down to make the bumper come more out to shape. I have to add the upper lining before doing the rest.. it's starting to look good now Big Grin

More trimmed:

RE: DIY: Turbo 2nd Gen TL

Alright guys, here's some more of the DIY install:

When it comes to installing the downpipe, first grab the v-band that comes with the turbo/kit:

Loosen the bolt that tightens it:

Grab the down pipe:

Place the V-band on the turbo:

Grab your metal ring gasket, can't miss it, it's like the header gasket rings, but huge, thin, with an indentation in it:

Place it properly on the flange:

Then place the flange within the v-band, making sure the gasket is sitting properly in between the two:

Use one of your hands to hold the v-band together while you place the bolt back on there:

Tighten the v-band bolt with the 10mm socket:

Alright, you're done with this phase! .. By this time, you're literally 80% or more through the entire install

^Those last two pictures are just sexy. damn. lol

Bumper progress:

Started the extra space for the new headlights:

Trimmed the old grille's lining with the dremel before sanding by hand:

... Onoz! Where'd the car go?

RE: DIY: Turbo 2nd Gen TL

Alright, here's another update..

So, since I was re-routing my power steering lines, I figured, I'd use the proper hose due to the amount of heat and possible pressure that the power steering fluid could be at:

They're cross-threaded also to avoid the tubing from ever swelling up:

Here's the intercooler piping that i've been redoing, looks much nicer now:

(yes there is a bike in the background, but it's been useless since day one! no brakes, both tires flat with warped shift lines?... at least it was free.. it was just laying there on the street. lol)

As you can see, both the FPR and piping easily clear the hood:

I also repositioned the FPR as well so the piping doesn't cover the visibility of the FPR gauge:

Here's some more clearer pics, sorry if they're a little blurry:

RE: DIY: Turbo 2nd Gen TL

Here's a small DIY on the Horn relocation for my setup.

First off, I had to find an ideal place to relocate my horns since the intercooler's taking up the place of where the horns used to be:

Since the horns ground through the assemblies that bolt to the chassis of the car, I wanted to make sure they get a proper contact surface for grounding... so I took then and grinded away the paint on both sides:

Grab the first horn:

Then pass the grinder over it gently, just enough to take away the paint:

Then after, inspect both sides:

Then mount your horns:

And now for testing, attach your alligator clips to their appropriate sources to check to see if they work:

Success! Now you have working horns! Now wire them up appropriately and move on to anything else you need to rewire... In my case, the headlights:

Testing the low beams:

Next DIY is adjusting the FPR, stay tuned Big Grin

Maybe go with a feeler thread in the respective section for now so see how much interest there is and then we can go from there...

RE: DIY: Turbo 2nd Gen TL

Done:

You guys only get to see three pics...

Above:

Front end shot:

And below... note, NO PIPES.

The car can easily drop another 3" without scraping against anything.

Created the downpipe in three detatchable pieces so that later on, when it comes time for a ATF fluid change or 6-speed conversion, the pipe can be easily taken apart and put back together in under 15 mins. The great part is that there's no leaks at all. Also, I heat wrapped all of the electrical wiring with heat resistant film (rated to 1,500 F) so everything's nice and protected.

The heat wrap comes in later this week... We'll be removing the piping to wrap it up. Other than that, the kit's complete
