RE: DIY: vtec solenoid cleaning

Well it blows hot air but when I turn on the a/c the fan comes on but it just blows air. Not any cooler than the air outside. Any ideas?

RE: DIY: vtec solenoid cleaning

i apologize for crappy pics, my camera and my skills suck.

ok so this is where the vtec solenoid is located on my engine. its a b17 gsr, but this should be the same for all b series vtec engines.

its just 3 10mm bolts holding it on, one plug, and a ground. the wires arent in the best shape as you can see. after taking it off, oil will pour out. it happens.

here is how it looks inside. not to bad on the surface, but there was alot of oil caked on inside of it.

time to clean it. here is what i used, bought it at walmart for 3 bucks and some change. this WILL destroy all caked on oil, guaranteed.

after i cleaned it, waiting to dry. the cleaner also evaporates quickly, so thats a plus. i just sprayed all the surface oil away, then sprayed it on the inside thru the holes and screen. i didnt bother taking the screen off, just sprayed thru it. let it sit inside for a few seconds then poured it out. did that a couple of times and this is how it turned out.

after wards i got a rag and sprayed some of the cleaner on it. then wiped down where it connects to the head. would definitely suggest everyone do this so that it seals good. all thats left are some stains the oil made.

i put the solenoid back on the head, tightened it down, then used the remainder of the cleaner around it. i did this so i could check for leaks. i cranked it up and let it idle up to operating temperature. no leaks. also i did the same thing you do for oil filters. put a little oil on the seal. it helps.

afterwards, i took it for a spirited drive... VERY spirited. seems to helped out alot. vtec doesnt kick as bad as it used to, it engages smoother, but seems to have a tiny bit more power than before, according to the butt dyno. i consider it a complete success with only 3 bucks and 30 minutes from start to finish in time.

feel free to ask any questions.

that why i love it, nobody has one, except in the few remaining 92-93 gsr tegs running around. like i said, i have never seen another one. my friend was lucky enough to find a wrecked b17 teg, and he bought it, took the engine out, then i bought it. theres not that many of them left. i have a piece of history in my engine bay, and that sounds badass.

Exactly..they say a B17 isn't any more then a storked B16..but I love them for their rare factor and if I EVER had one, I think I would keep it as completely stock as possible.

lol ive had many people ask to buy it, and the answer was always no. unless somebody wanted to really overpay for it, its not going anywhere.

youll hate me for how much i payed for it though. 1200 bucks.

as perfect as could be. in the 3+ years ive had it, ive only replaced the water pump, timing belt, and timing belt tensioner, and had the valves adjusted. everything internal wise is the same from when it was made. i even have a p61 original b17 ecu to go with it.
