Calling any subwoofer experts!
So i have been running my subwoofers the standard way with the magnet inside the box as usually seen. Though i have been wanting to change it around and see if i can build a box that fits my trunk space a little bit better.

Anyway~
Which type of box (if built correctly of course) will give the loudest volume. I know ported boxes that are tuned well usually are the loudest, but which mounting type gives the best sound? Inverted with the magnet outside the box, or the magnet inside the box?

Thanks.

what kind ve subs do you have. ported is the way to go, and its best to have ur magnet inside the box. it will hit more too. thats what i think. my friend has 2 type Rs, 12inch, with a ported box. perfect, loud as fuck.

I think having your magnet facing out is more show than power/sq. Bandpass boxes are usually louder than ported boxes, but sloppy. Ported is louder than sealed. Go ported, magnet inside. Make sure you're giving your sub enough airspace in the box.

RE: Calling any subwoofer experts!
Thanks guys. btw I have two Alpine Type R's 10 inch.

I have been building sub boxes for a while, i have quite a few under my belt when it comes to building and getting them too sound good (i do a lot of math and really get into the physics behind the sound).
~Anyway.. So i think my next box is going to be ported with the magnet inside, so pretty much my box now, but i really want to show off my amp a little more. Right now its hidden behind the subs. I'm thinking ill put it on a pedestal type deal above the subs.

RE: Calling any subwoofer experts!
nice, I used to have two type r 10's.

Go ported... and if you go to rockford fosgate's site they have a calculator that will tell you exactly how much airspace you need (at least they used to).

inverse mounting the subwoofer can increase the volume of the box, also it can allow better cooling of the driver.

as for a sound difference. i doubt you would notice a difference IF box volume was EXACTLY the same.

RE: Calling any subwoofer experts!
from experience, ported boxes are boomier but dont have the tight accurate bass that selaed boxes produce. ive got my type-r's n sealed boxes and they hit extremely hard but go through the ranges very well

yeah i have to type r 12's in a sealed box and that shit is sharp and goes through the bass range without a problem. so if you want boom go ported. if you want clarity go sealed.

I'm still not sure which way to go ported or sealed but im going to mess around with it and see.

How bad is it for a subwoofer to sit in direct sunlight in the summer for a few hours? I'm working on a new box design and there would be times when the front cone and surround would be exposed to sunlight.

RE: Calling any subwoofer experts!
i wouldnt think at all besides possibily some color fading of the cone. sun really shouldnt hurt the subs coils or magnets at all

That's pretty sweet! I usually do my work myself, with a little help from my audio tech guys. They are really good at what they do and getting things designed correctly as far as boxes, though they lack when it comes to the questions i'm asking here.

Thanks again!
