Anyone running sohc turbo?
I'm working on planning out a budget turbo setup on my 93 EG8. Good old D15B7 could use some extra power. From the research I've done. 200 fwhp is the max the block can take before a guaranteed window is permanently built into the block. So I'm going to shoot for about 160-180 fwhp to keep it pretty safe. I haven't decided on what I'm going to use for a fuel management system. Could be a s200 or s300 but that's some serious money talking there. A friend is running a turbo LS off of eCtune which runs about 300 bucks for the hardware. Seems like a viable option.

Only thing that I've decided on is that the supporting mods are all going to be done first and that this fall/winter I'll be putting in a JVT 2 row radiator (all aluminum of course) and some mishimoto hoses. I've got a great hookup on parts and can probably get all this stuff for under 200 without shipping.

But yeah, anyone on here go the SOHC turbo route? Advice or suggestions are welcome.

it is my opinion that whenever you are going with forced induction that the cheapest route is not typicially the best route

i know that the s300 is a little bit of money but the life of your motor could be worth it (im not too sure on the value of the stock block)

besides owning a turbo 4 banger is no small task you have to build it right the first time cause it could cost you twice as much to do it over again

Completely agreed. I have heard a lot of good things about the eCtune thing though. It will take some more investigation but if it gets the job done as well as the s300 and costs less... I'm down with that.

I know I can't afford a full engine build and the actual turbo part of the project is easily a year or two off. But thats why I'm planning on keeping the boost turned down.

D15 blocks are a dime a dozen.... almost literally.

I have a d16 SOHC boosted with 17 psi pushing 279 whp running with a s300 fms. The motor was completely rebuilt, machined, bor'd an built to handle the boost. My s300 costed 600$ an worth every penny, I was told the s300's are the best with the d series SOHC! I have the ability to go to 33 psi boost an go up to 350-390 whp as soon as I get a boost controller and bigger waist gate spring.

my advice|suggestion would be to get the s300, even with spending the monies cause a d15 maybe a dime a dozen but if you were to spend the extra monies on the cheaper fms an blow it out, you'll have to spend more on another block and another fms an all in all spend more then you budgeted...Just as chiwhitesi was saying too Smile

Thats very true. Unfotunately my plans for this car may have gone in the shitter. This is what she looks like now.

09 GMC Sierra wasn't paying any attention at all and ploughed into me at about 30 while I was stopped on a red. If it gets turned into a salvage title then I'm not going to put the money into it for a turbo setup.

Sorry to hear about the accident. No, it's not totalled. And for your future plans, remember:

Cheap + Fast = Not Reliable
Cheap + Reliable = Not Fast
Fast + Reliable = Not Cheap

Eh, I'm not sure about the car being totaled. There is some structural damage in the rear. We'll see what the insurance company says. I almost wish they would total it so i can get a check and buy it back and half ass fix it cheap.
